BIOGRAPHY Liz Power was born in Southern New Jersey on a stormy Feb. 6th. Although her given name is Elizabeth Anne, her father began calling her "Liz" at a very young age, much to her mother's dismay (she wanted "Elizabeth" to stick). And yes, Power is her REAL last name!
As small children, Liz and her brother, Ryan, would
sing songs while visiting with their grandparents.
Their grandmother would use an old tape recorder to
record their mini performances, and amazingly, these
recordings still exist today. Liz and Ryan would also
sing with their parents, learning 4-part harmonies and
singing songs by artists like The Mamas and Papas, The
Beach Boys, and The Beatles. Growing up surrounded by
music surely had a great impact on Liz, as well as her
brother, who is an opera graduate of the prestigious
Eastman School of Music.
Music was always a passion for Liz, but playing sports
was a big part of her childhood as well. Liz played
basketball for a few years, and excelled at tennis
camp, but her main sport was soccer. Soccer became an
all-year event from the time she was 10 until about
her junior year of high school. It was then that Liz
decided to focus more on drama and music, leaving the
sports world altogether.
Middle school was a wonderful time for Liz, as it was
the first time she would be involved in musicals. In
6th grade, she landed the role of the evil Queen in
Snow White, and was thrilled when she got to fly as
Peter Pan in 7th grade. One of her favorite roles,
even to this day, came in 8th grade--Ursula the
Seawitch in The Little Mermaid. Liz participated in a
summer theatre camp called Summer Stage all through
her middle school years, and continued to perform in
community theatre as she got older. However, one of
her most memorable shows came in high school when she
and her brother played OPPOSITE each other as Laurey
and Curly in Oklahoma! You can imagine the jokes that
came with "People will say we're in love"! Thankful
the director had cut the kissing scenes, Liz and Ryan
had a fantastic time performing together. Liz was
asked to teach and direct at Summer Stage, which she
did for 4 years and loved very minute of it.
When it came time for Liz to decide about her future
career, it wasn't an obvious choice. Being a very
practical person, she viewed the entertainment
business as unstable and risky. But when it came down
to it, she couldn't think of anything else that would
make her happier than to pursue a career in
performing. Liz was thrilled to be accepted to her
first college choice, Syracuse Univerisity, and
graduated with a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre. While at
SU, she was nominated for the Irene Ryan Awards for
her performance as Lola in "Damn Yankees". Out of
over 200 nominees, 2 actors were chosen to perform at
the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Although Liz
was not one of the 2, she was chosen as the Alternate
Winner, and was the only nominee in the top ten to
represent MUSICAL theatre in the ACTING competion by
singing "Everybody Loves Louis" from "Sunday in the
Park with George".
Before graduating, Liz booked the Non-Union National
Tour of "Jekyll and Hyde" which she began rehearsing
for immediately following a summerstock contract. A
month after the 9-month tour ended, she recieved her
Equity card playing the role of Louise in "Gypsy".
She then moved to NYC for the first time and began to
pound the pavement...
Liz is proud to say that she has worked in
commercials, summerstock, regional theatre, union and
non-union national tours, cruise ships, and European
tours. Her goal has always been to be a WORKING ACTOR
and she feels thankful to be making a living doing
what she loves to do. She will continue her career in
acting and singing as long as it makes her happy...and
for now, it does!
Liz lives in Astoria, NY with her longtime boyfriend,
David Havasi, who is also an actor. |
